Discovering My Courageous Island Self

As I reflect on my experiences at the Caribbean Christian Center for the Deaf (CCCD) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, I am reminded of the transformative power of embracing our true selves. For me, this journey began when I was a shy and stuttering young girl who struggled to communicate with others. But over the years, I've grown into a more confident and courageous individual, thanks in large part to the support and inclusivity I received from my hosts at CCCD.

As a child, I would often hide behind my mother's legs during conversations, afraid to speak up or look others in the eye. My stuttering hands would fail me as I struggled to sign language fluently, leading to feelings of frustration and resentment. But through the kindness and patience of my deaf friends and teachers at CCCD, I slowly began to emerge from my shell.

As I spent more time on the island, I discovered a new sense of courage and confidence that allowed me to take risks and try new things. My mistakes became opportunities for growth and laughter with my friends, rather than sources of embarrassment. And as I looked around at the warm and welcoming community at CCCD, I realized that I had found a true sense of belonging.

Now, when people ask me where I'm from, I proudly say that I've spent enough time on island to be considered a Ja-merican - a label that speaks to the inclusivity and warmth I've received from countless individuals in Montego Bay. And as I look back on my childhood, I am grateful for the lessons I learned at CCCD about embracing our true selves and finding courage in our struggles.
